COVID-19 has had a significant impact on our economy. The state will need to carefully review its budget to determine how to proceed. In all likelihood, we will need to tighten our belt and adjust priorities. Economic recovery should be the top priority going into the 2020 legislative session.
We all pay more in taxes than we would like - property, sales and income taxes. Sherri is not in favor of raising taxes. Any tax increase should be a last resort. Sherri will carefully scrutinize incentives given to businesses and advocate for measurable outcomes.
Internet is a must-have in today's society. It provides opportunity for economic growth including tele-medicine, distance learning and work-from-home jobs. Sherri supports initiatives to expand rural internet across Kansas.
We spend alot of money to run the government. It is in our best interest to make it run as efficiently as possible. Good work has already been done but there is more to do. Not sure at this time where the savings are but we need to keep looking and nothing is off the table for review.
We pay too much for healthcare. Sherri is concerned about the impact of catastrophic health issues on people with no health insurance. Healthcare should be a right not a privilege. Investing in our health early will save us money later and prevent untimely deaths. Sherri supports reallocating money to improve health outcomes. Overtime, this will reduce the prison population and workload of the department of corrections and children and family services.
This is a non-negotiable item. Everyone regardless of who you are, who you love, what you look like, where you are from, or what your religious beliefs are deserves to be respected and treated equally. There is no room for discrimination and hate in our state.
Our children are our most important asset. They need to be healthy, socially competent and have the skills to be successful. Sherri supports public education, technical career fields and union training programs. Advanced education is important too.
We have a limited supply of natural resources. It is important we take care of the environment including our water supply. Our reservoirs are filling up with sediment which contributes to flooding. We have been putting off addressing this problem. Sherri supports initiatives to protect our resources and environment.
Public officials should be transparent with processes and decisionmaking. We elect the government officials; and they are there to protect our rights. Citizens should be encouraged to be civically engaged. The more information they have the better.
Sherri supports workers having the right to organize and advocate for safety, wages, and benefits. Many companies are reducing benefits including eliminating merit increases, paid time off and reducing severance benefits. Non-bargaining employees have little leverage. Sherri also supports raising the $7.25 minimum wage.
Sherri supports making voting easier, i.e., permanent advance ballot for whoever wants it, automatic registration when a person turns 18 years of age, expanded early voting options and more consistency in how information is presented to voters on county websites.
Sherri supports preserving our constitutional rights including the right to bear arms.
